Hey there! Let’s dive into the etiquette of tipping. While tipping is not mandatory, it’s a wonderful way to show appreciation for those who help make your special day even more memorable. Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the world of tipping your wedding vendors.
General Guideline
I believe you should tip if the person or persons are providing their services on the actual day. For example, catering staff, musicians, photographers. They are all there, running around like crazy, providing their services. They are giving you more than their service; they are also giving you their time, likely, many hours. And while they have often baked that into the cost of their services, it’s worth showing them appreciation. Others, such as your seamstress, florist or wedding cake baker, especially if you need to go pick up the product yourself, do not need to be tipped unless you feel they have done an extraordinary job.
Another way to show your appreciation is online reviews. This can often be more valuable to a vendor than a monetary gift, especially if they are just starting their business.
Catering Staff
Your culinary team plays a vital role in keeping your guests happy. A tip of 15-20% of the total catering bill is standard, but do check your contract as some include gratuity. If it’s not included, consider tipping each staff member (from the chef to the servers to the bartenders) individually.
Wedding Planner
Your wedding planner is your fairy godparent, turning your dreams into reality. While tipping isn’t expected, if they’ve gone above and beyond, a gesture of 10-20% of their fee or a thoughtful gift is a sweet way to say thank you.
Officiant
Whether they’re leading a traditional religious ceremony or a secular exchange of vows, your officiant sets the tone for your ceremony. A donation to their church or organization (if applicable) or a personal tip ranging from $50-$100 is a respectful way to show gratitude.
Photographers and Videographers
Capturing your love story in frames, these artists don’t typically expect tips. However, if they’ve captured your day perfectly, a tip of $50-$100 per photographer/videographer is a nice gesture.
Music and Entertainment
The band or DJ that keeps your dance floor lively all night deserves some love too! A tip of $25-$50 per musician or 10-15% for a DJ is a common practice.
Hair and Makeup Artists
These magicians make you look and feel fabulous. Standard tipping is 15-20% of their service fee, similar to a salon visit.
Transportation
If you’ve hired a limo or a bus to ferry your guests, a tip of 15-20% of the total bill is customary.
Delivery and Setup Staff
The unseen heroes who deliver and set up your décor, chairs, etc., deserve recognition too. A tip of $5-$20 per person is usually sufficient.
Remember, while tips are appreciated, they’re not obligatory. Your budget and satisfaction with the service should guide your tipping decisions. Above all, a heartfelt thank you note goes a long way in showing your gratitude. Each wedding is unique, so feel free to adjust these guidelines to best fit your special day!
